1. The Colosseum – This is one of the most interesting and impressive structures from ancient Rome. It stands almost 50 meters high and was capable of seating almost 60,000 people. In its day, the Colosseum was the site of epic and barbaric battles between men and animals. Although the legacy left is not the most venerable, the structure remains Rome’s most magnificent landmark of the past.
2. The Pantheon – There is no way to describe the immensity of the Pantheon unless you have seen it. The only other way to understand the size is by hearing some of the structures dimensions. A dome 43 meters tall, 24 columns measuring 1.5 meters in diameter and walls that are 6 meters thick. In the center of the dome there is a small hole called a oculus to allow natural lighting. You better come have a look for yourself.
3. Vatican City – This is the smallest country in the world in terms of population and area. It is completely inside the city of Rome and it serves as the spiritual center for Catholicism. St. Peter’s Basilica is the largest and most visited church in the world. The interior is huge and the detail of the entire building is spectacular. Other impressive sights in Vatican City include the Sistine Chapel, about 20 museums, impressive palaces and the amazing Vatican Gardens.
4. Forum Romanum – This area was the control center for imperial Rome. There are the remains of governmental buildings as well as huge basilicas and exultant arches. During the height of the Roman Empire, this is the place where senators gathered, important festivals happened and religious ceremonies took place. Today it is mostly reduced to ruins, but you can easily picture how beautiful the Forum Romanum once was.
5. Trevi Fountain – One of Rome’s greatest accomplishments pools in the water of the beautiful Trevi Fountain. An aqueduct from a spring 20 km away has brought water to Rome for more than 2000 years. The statues of the fountain depict Neptune (the god of the sea), two horses representing the calm and rough sea water, one statue for abundance and one for salubriousness(health). Folklore states the throwing a coin into the fountain over your shoulder will mean a return trip to Rome in the future.
